Improving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) Using Student Worksheets Based on Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

Abstract

Higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) are one part of 21st-century skills as a foundation for facing the demands of life in the future. Several research results show that HOTS is still relatively low and needs to be improved. Therefore, educators try to apply PBL-based student worksheets in biology learning. This research is pre-experimental research by implementing PBL-based student worksheets in the classroom. The type of experimental research used is a group pretest-posttest design. Research data was analyzed using a paired sample t-test. This research aims to determine the effect of PBL-based student worksheets on biology students' HOTS. The research was conducted for one semester, in the Human Physiology course. Data collection was carried out through a pre-test and final test using 15 essay questions. The results of the research show that there is an influence of the PBL-based student worksheet model in improving biology students' high-level skills (HOTS). Learning activities with PBL-based student worksheets create active interaction between students to find, analyze, evaluate and create solutions to problems found.
